After claiming that several of Manchester City's youngsters had "promising futures," Joao Cancelo has tipped teammate Phil Foden to become the finest player in the world.

Cancelo, 27, signed a new five-and-a-half-year contract with the Etihad on Tuesday, as a reward for his strong start to the season.

The Portugal right-back has become an important element of Pep Guardiola's backline, scoring three goals and providing eight assists to help City build a comfortable lead at the top of the Premier League table and continue to the Champions League knockout stages.

After extending his contract with Manchester City this week, he informed the club's official website, "It makes all sense to extend my contract with Manchester City.''I've learnt to be more versatile as a player.' I believe I can now play in a variety of positions, not only right-back or left-back.' I believe I can play in a variety of places on the field, and I believe it is easier on this team because all of the players are of high calibre. It's more easier to play for this team than for any other.'

With 15 games still to play, City are nine points clear at the top of the Premier League thanks to Cancelo's and others' contributions.

This season, Manchester United has been extremely efficient, scoring 55 goals in 23 games while surrendering only 14. With so many great young players in their ranks, Cancelo feels it was a no-brainer to extend his stay at City, praising Foden in particular.

'I'm always confident in my ability to thrive with this club.' 'We have a lot of guys with big futures,' the former Juventus midfielder continued.

'Phil Foden is going to be one of the finest players in the world, if not the best.' 'The atmosphere around the first team is fantastic, and I believe it is one of the important causes in our recent success.'

Foden has become one of Guardiola's most important attacking players in recent seasons, scoring 16 goals in 50 appearances for the champions last season. The 21-year-old, who has played with City since he was four years old, has seven goals and six assists in 22 games this season.
